Historical Inspiration
This brass crusader helmet brings back the great helm, the fully enclosed helmet of the crusading knight. In the late 12th century, knights began adding face plates to their helmets, and by the 13th century the flat-topped great helm was a familiar sight from Europe to the Holy Land, worn over a padded arming cap and mail coif. This crusader knight helmet captures that imposing silhouette, finished with a riveted brass cross as a decorative tribute to crusader faith.
The Meaning of the Cross
For the crusaders, the cross was a vow made visible. Those who pledged to go “took the cross,” sewing a cloth cross onto their garments, and became known as crucesignati, “those signed with the cross.” The Knights Templar later wore a red cross on white, still one of the most recognized emblems of the Middle Ages. A templar crusader helmet bearing the cross echoes that promise of faith.
The Brass Crusader Helmet: Material and Features

Care Instructions
- Wipe clean with a dry cloth after use.
- Apply a light coat of oil to the steel to prevent rust. The helmet arrives with a layer of oil coating on it, to prevent rust during shipping and storage.
- Polish the brass with a suitable brass polish. Brass is rust resistant but forms a patina with time and use.
- Keep the leather straps dry and condition them occasionally.
- Store in a clean, dry place.
Note: Each brass crusader helmet is handcrafted, so variations in finish, brass tone and rivet placement are normal. On one, the ends of the cross may curve softly; on another they may finish in crisp, sharp points. Like the hand-cut crosses once stitched onto crusaders’ garments, each one carries the mark of the craftsman who made it, along with gentle variations in finish, brass tone and rivet placement that give your helmet a character all its own.
