Description

Hand Forged Iron with a Black Finish

Crafted from hand-forged iron, this Ninth Century Penannular Brooch is built for durability, strength, and lasting use. Its traditional oil-black finish provides a protective layer that helps resist rust as well as enhances the look. The finish also helps reduce the chance of staining garments, making it both practical and historically inspired.

Inspired by Viking and Medieval Times

Penannular brooches were among the most common fasteners used during the Viking Age and medieval period. Worn by both men and women, they were used to secure heavy wool cloaks, shawls, and outer garments while also acting as decorative accessories. Inspired by original historical examples, this viking penannular brooch recreates the simple and highly functional design widely used during the 9th century.

Secure Fastening with a Penannular Design

The brooch has the classic open-ring (penannular) design paired with a long iron pin for secure fastening. To wear it, simply pierce the pin through the fabric, rotate the ring so the cloth rests inside the opening, and lock the pin into position. This traditional fastening method keeps cloaks, shawls, scarves, and other garments securely in place while remaining easy to use. The compact size makes this viking brooch pin ideal for lighter cloaks, shoulder wraps, tunics, and other clothing.

A Small Detail That Completes Your Historical Outfit

Whether you’re attending a Viking reenactment, medieval fair, LARP event, SCA gathering, this Ninth Century Penannular Brooch adds an authentic finishing touch to your clothing. Its handcrafted iron material, design and timeless look make it both a practical garment fastener and an attractive medieval brooch for collectors and enthusiasts .

Care & Maintenance

  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each use.
  • Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to help maintain the finish.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from prolonged moisture.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the finish.

Note: Each brooch is individually hand forged using traditional methods. Slight differences in texture, finish, hammer marks, and shape are natural.
